The Plea Written by Camille (as C

Narrative

Emilia Perez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each in search of her own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an under-appreciated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofia Gascon discusses the two years of preparation it took for this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and the two extremes of her own personality she had to portray as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired for the idea for the musical by a chapter in a novel about a drug lord who longs to change his identity. A French title card misspells the Indian town as “Dehli”… Featured on Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna’s SPICE and Selena Surprises! (2024). And not only that, she does it perfectly

EnglishI came to write this after watching its gala screening at the London film festival. A wild and insane rollercoaster ride that mixes crime, comedy, musical and thriller all in one, and pulls it off with flying colours! The four actresses at the centre are the force and were directed to perfection by Audiard. Karla plays her character pre and post transition as it comes naturally to her, having done little publicly as an actress. It’s a powerful performance that is very much of our time. I’m proud to be alive in a time where a trans actress is playing a trans role. The tragedy of leaving a life behind, but the promise of what she’s always needed. Zoe sings and dances and cries and laughs and everything I think an actor dreams of doing, and even more so in a film.

And she has a beautiful voice!

I’ve never seen a movie of hers before and I’m so glad this was my first because she shines! There’s a scene where she’s in a car and, realizing what just happened, she breaks down hysterically. Think Margo in I, Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons. That scene alone should earn her an Academy Award. Selena, who I was most excited to see in this movie, is amazing. She plays a mobster’s wife, the kind of icy woman who simmers beneath the surface and who I think needs to be recast because, as a young girl who endured intense scrutiny and then suffered from psychosis, she knows all too well what it’s like to remain calm for far too long. The only moment in the screening where I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience is when her character, Jessi, finally unleashes her emotions on us, the audience, after years of oppression. The agony and anger are heard in her voice.

She is heartwarming!

It is proof of why she has said that acting is her true calling and how passionate she is about it. It would be stupid to still think that she is a Disney kid and still has something to prove. Her journey as an actress is actually very exciting as a fan of almost two decades. Lastly, Adriana’s character is like the sunshine in the dark and twisted world that the movie takes place in. And she perfectly complements the work of the other three actresses. She brings love and sweetness to the story through her work. One important thing to note is that this movie is like an opera. It is reminiscent of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was also almost entirely sung.

The cinematography was brilliant

Emotionally it is definitely intense like one, with little moments of calm when you realize that you are watching a movie. At the end of the movie, Selena’s character lies almost unconscious in the passenger seat while her lover drives furiously. The way the camera pans over the car to his face… it was like a painting, very poetic but tragic. I’m so glad I saw it before it came out on Netflix. It’s amazing when a movie can make you feel like that, take you out of your normality and make you a little crazy.
